All your household wastewater will be collected and treated on the spot (on site). The treated effluent will be returned to the soil, and, after soil filtration, to the groundwater. Some components are common to all onsite systems. Others depend on your site conditions.

The SeptiTech® STAAR™ (Smart Trickling Anaerobic/Aerobic Recirculation) Commercial Filter Systems utilize a biopack plastic media to treat high organic loads and integrate with other technologies and accessories.  The simple, automatic and reliable equalization and clarification process of the STAAR™ biological trickling filter technology also maintains low levels of Nitrate-N with all below-grade components that fit in readily available concrete, plastic or fiberglass tanks. The “Smart” controller of the STAAR™ systems recognizes situations dealing with peak, low, intermittent or no-flow conditions. SeptiTech’s “Smart” technology allows the system to go into a sleep mode that will dial down activity and eventually shut all power off until normal flow conditions are detected. This allows the STAAR™ system to achieve lower operating costs and power requirements. Additional features are also available to further enhance quality and dependability.

How Does the System Work?

  1. Effluent from the primary settling zone flows into the bottom of the trickling filter mixing with the treated wastewater.
  2. Wastewater is then pumped up into the trickling filter.  The pump simultaneously draws a robust amount of air.  This air combined with the uniform spray provides efficient treatment as the water-and-air combination trickles down through the filter media.  For the Commercial System, there are two stages and two types of media with multiple recirculation methods.
  3. The SeptiTech® STAAR™ Filter Panel senses “surge flow” and “low flow” activity; automatically adjusting the discharge rate as needed.  It even senses a “no flow” situation to “slow down” or put the system in “Sleep” mode.
  4. Wastewater is systematically pumped back to the settling zone to remove sludge from the trickling filter. Thus, all sludge management is in the settling zone.
  5. After treatment, a pump will send small, frequent time doses to ensure optimal soil absorption.

USA and International Product Certifications

The list below is a summary of a few certifications received for the products of Bio-Microbics:

  • NSF/ANSI Standard 40, Class 1 Certified-Standard 40 is for residential wastewater treatment systems having rated capacities between 400 gallons (1514 Liters) and 1500 gallons (5678 Liters) per day. Approved products have completed a six month (26 week) test where wastewater of required strength is introduced to the system at its rated capacity. Stress sequences are included to simulate wash day, working parent, power outage, and vacation conditions. The effluent criteria required is based on the U.S. EPA secondary effluent treatment requirements for municipal treatment facilities.
  • NSF/ANSI Standard 245 (Nitrogen Reduction) Certified– Technologies testing against Standard 245 must either be Standard 40 certified or be evaluated against Standard 40 at the same time an evaluation is being carried out for Standard 245, as both tests can be run concurrently. The standard is set up to evaluate systems having rated capacities between 400 gallons and 1500 gallons per day. A treatment system must meet Standard 40 effluent criteria as well as reduce the influent TKN by at least 50%.
  • U.S. EPA–ETV (Environmental Technology Verification) – validates the performance of technology that may improve the protection of the environment. – SeptiTech®, Report No. 02/04/WQPC-SWP
